Rabiu Kwankwaso has directed his supporters to resign from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) immediately, as he prepares to defect to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) next week.
The former New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) leader, who joined the ADC only a few weeks ago, will move to the NDC alongside Peter Obi. Both men are expected to feature on a joint presidential ticket as Obi-Kwankwaso candidates in the upcoming election.
According to sources, Obi is also poised to announce his defection shortly.
All lawmakers who followed Kwankwaso from the NNPP to the ADC are now expected to resign from the party and join the NDC. The same discussions are underway with legislators who originally defected to the ADC alongside Peter Obi.
Meanwhile, last-minute efforts by coalition leaders to halt the planned defections are underway, but these are unlikely to succeed. Kwankwaso’s bloc held a meeting with NDC leaders last night to finalise discussions on their anticipated move.
