Rabiu Kwankwaso has asked his supporters to resign from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), in a move that signals an imminent political realignment ahead of next week.
The former leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), who only recently joined the ADC, is expected to defect to the National Democratic Congress, according to sources familiar with the development.
Kwankwaso is also anticipated to align with Peter Obi, who is reportedly preparing to make a similar move. Both politicians are expected to run on a joint presidential ticket, a development that could reshape the country’s opposition landscape ahead of future elections.
Lawmakers who previously defected from the NNPP to the ADC are also expected to resign their membership, with plans to join the NDC alongside Kwankwaso. Similar discussions are said to be ongoing with legislators aligned with Obi who had earlier moved to the ADC.
Efforts by some coalition leaders to halt the defections are ongoing but appear unlikely to succeed. Sources indicate that Kwankwaso’s political bloc held late-night talks with NDC leaders to finalise arrangements for the transition.
If confirmed, the coordinated move could mark one of the most significant political shifts in recent months, consolidating key opposition figures under a new platform.
