Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) militants launched a deadly ambush Friday night on a Nigerian military convoy in Borno State, reportedly abducting a serving brigade general and killing multiple soldiers, including members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), according to HumAngle.

The kidnapped officer, a brigade commander, was leading the troops at the time of the attack. If confirmed, this would mark the first known instance of an extremist group in Nigeria capturing a serving general directly from the frontline.

While insurgents have previously killed high-ranking military personnel, abduction of officers at this level remains exceedingly rare.

Military authorities have yet to release an official statement on the incident, and casualty figures have not been disclosed. The Nigerian Army spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Onyechi Anele, has not responded to requests for comment.
