The Federal Government (FG) of Nigeria has ordered the immediate temporary closure of multiple Federal Unity Colleges (also known as Federal Government Colleges or FGCs). Some reports cite 47 schools, while others mention 41 schools.
• Reason: The directive is due to the “recent security challenges” in the country and the need to prevent security breaches, specifically citing the recent mass abductions of schoolchildren in Kebbi and Niger States.
The circular, issued by the Federal Ministry of Education, mandates principals of the affected schools to “suspend academic activities and release students with immediate effect.”The majority of the affected schools are located in the North-West, North-Central, and North-East regions of the country.
This action appears to be a proactive measure to safeguard the lives of students and staff following the heightened threat of insecurity targeting schools in the affected regions.
