The Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday ordered the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to immediately suspend its national convention originally scheduled to hold this weekend in Ibadan, Oyo State.
In a judgment delivered by Justice Peter Lifu, the court also restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from supervising, monitoring, or recognizing the results of any PDP convention held without the inclusion of former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, as a candidate.
The court found that Lamido was unlawfully denied the opportunity to obtain a nomination form to contest for the PDP’s national chairmanship, a move deemed contrary to both the party’s constitution and internal regulations.
Highlighting the party’s responsibility to provide equal opportunities for members to participate in leadership contests, the judgment emphasized the need for deliberate measures that enable members to pursue their political ambitions.
Consequently, Justice Lifu ordered that the PDP convention remain on hold to allow Lamido to obtain the nomination form, rally his supporters, and conduct his campaign ahead of the rescheduled convention.
