A profound tragedy struck Kano State on Saturday as at least 20 sports representatives died in a horrific road accident while returning from the recently concluded National Sports Festival (NSF) held in Ogun State.

The fatal auto crash occurred in Dakatsalle town, approximately 50 kilometers from Kano, plunging the state into mourning.

Mustapha Kwankwaso, the State Commissioner of Youth and Sport Development, confirmed the devastating incident in an official statement. He extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased athletes and officials, describing the incident as a deeply painful moment for the entire state.

According to reports, the bus conveying 30 members of the Kano contingent, including athletes, officials, and a journalist, reportedly plunged from the Dakatsalle bridge. While initial reports indicated 20 fatalities, some sources suggest the death toll could be higher, with at least 21 lives lost.

Commissioner Kwankwaso noted that several others sustained injuries in the crash and are currently receiving medical treatment. He assured the public that the government stands firmly with the affected individuals and will provide necessary medical attention and support.
The Kano State Sports Commission Chairman, Umar Bala Fagge, also confirmed the incident, stating that rescue efforts are ongoing. Among the deceased is said to be the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Sports Commission and a photojournalist.

This developing story has cast a somber shadow over what was intended to be a celebratory return for the Kano contingent from the “Gateway Games 2024,” which concluded recently in Ogun State. The state government has pledged a full report on the incident and will review safety measures for future travels involving official state teams.
