Seventeen members of Nigeria’s lower legislative chamber have defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), marking one of the largest coordinated party switches in recent months.

The announcement was formally read during Tuesday’s plenary session in the House of Representatives (Nigeria) by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, confirming the lawmakers’ change of political allegiance on the floor of parliament.

The defections highlight ongoing realignments within Nigeria’s legislative politics, where shifting party loyalties continue to reshape influence blocs ahead of future electoral contests.

While no detailed reasons were provided on the floor for the mass movement, such defections in Nigeria are often tied to internal party disputes, strategic positioning, or emerging coalition calculations.

The development is expected to intensify scrutiny of party stability within the legislature as political actors begin positioning themselves ahead of the next election cycle.
