Super Falcons defender Ashleigh Plumptre has brushed off questions about her marital plans with humour after being asked if she could see herself marrying a Nigerian man. The 27-year-old, who switched allegiance from England to Nigeria in 2022, faced the question during a recent media chat in Lagos. With her father sitting close by, the former Leicester City Women star burst into laughter before giving a candid reply.
“No, I’m 27 and I’ve not even… yeah, that’s not even anything in my mind right now. I mean, I don’t have any time,” Plumptre said with a smile. When pressed further about whether she would ever marry a Nigerian, she joked about the timing, adding: “Do you know what? To hear this question when I’m sat next to my dad is kind of a funny situation, but…”
Born in Leicester, Plumptre rose through the youth system at Leicester City before playing for Notts County, USC Trojans, LA Galaxy OC and eventually leading her hometown club to promotion into the Women’s Super League. In 2023, she made a high-profile move to Al-Ittihad in the Saudi Women’s Premier League, where her consistency and leadership at the back have earned widespread praise. Since committing to Nigeria in 2022, she has become a key figure in the Super Falcons, representing the country at the 2023 Women’s World Cup and later lifting the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Her influence goes beyond football as she was named a Global Ambassador for Mission 89 in February 2025, an NGO dedicated to fighting youth trafficking in sports, and she has also been honoured with the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) for her contributions to Nigerian football. For many fans, her lighthearted response to the marriage question only reinforced her approachable personality.
