The Nigerian Army and the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) have entered into a strategic alliance aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s national security framework through knowledge-driven solutions and advanced intellectual training.
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, announced the partnership on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, during a courtesy visit by the Vice Chancellor of NOUN, Professor Udoma Oji Udoma, to the Army Headquarters in Abuja.
Addressing the importance of the collaboration, Lt. Gen. Shaibu emphasized that modern warfare has evolved beyond physical combat, requiring “intellectual superiority” to tackle asymmetric and cyber threats. He noted that integrating advanced studies in intelligence and cybersecurity into military training is essential for the Army’s ongoing transformation.
“The Nigerian Army is committed to building a corps of intellectually agile personnel,” the COAS stated. “By leveraging NOUN’s technology-driven learning model, we are ensuring our officers are equipped with the mental fortitude and professional competence required to safeguard our territorial integrity in a complex era.”
In his remarks, Vice Chancellor Professor Udoma Oji Udoma proposed the expansion of NOUN study centres to military barracks nationwide. This move, he explained, would provide soldiers with flexible access to higher education without compromising their operational duties. He also called for a deeper synergy between NOUN and the Nigerian Army University Biu (NAUB) to foster research and innovation in security studies.
The visit concluded with a mutual commitment to institutionalize the partnership as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s long-term resilience strategy.
