The All Progressives Congress (APC) has brushed aside criticism from opposition parties, insisting that its growing influence across the country is the result of sustained grassroots engagement rather than media appearances.

Speaking on the increasing number of governors defecting to the ruling party, APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, said the party’s strength lies in behind-the-scenes mobilisation and strategic engagement with citizens at the grassroots.

“While the opposition spends its time talking on television, we are on the ground engaging and mobilising people. Most of our work happens behind the scenes,” Yilwatda said. “What the public sees on TV is only the outcome; the real process takes place away from the cameras.”

He argued that the recent wave of defections to the APC reflects public confidence in the party’s structure and governance approach, rather than any deliberate attempt to weaken opposition parties.

The APC chairman dismissed claims that the ruling party is steering the country towards a one-party state, stressing that political competition remains a fundamental part of Nigeria’s democracy.

“We are not promoting a one-party state,” he said. “However, it is not the responsibility of the APC to strengthen the opposition. Every party must do the work required to earn the trust of Nigerians.”

Yilwatda maintained that the APC would continue to focus on organisation, outreach and policy-driven engagement, leaving political rivals to decide whether to remain in what he described as “media-driven politics” or return to grassroots mobilisation.

His comments come amid heightened political activity and realignments ahead of future elections, with the APC consolidating its presence across several states.
