Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume has urged Northerners to support President Bola Tinubu in 2027, saying the region should wait until 2031 before pursuing the presidency.
Akume made the remarks while addressing Benue indigenes living in Kaduna. He urged them to remain united and resist political moves that could undermine the North’s collective interests.
He said Northerners should not be distracted by the 2027 presidential contest, arguing that individual ambitions could divide the region and weaken its political influence.
Akume also warned against efforts to split Northerners along political, religious or personal lines. He called on leaders to put the region’s shared interests ahead of their own ambitions.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s political history, the former Benue governor cautioned against repeating past disagreements among leaders, saying unity and cooperation were essential to the North’s continued political relevance.
He also called for national unity and peaceful coexistence among Nigeria’s ethnic and religious communities, saying the country’s progress depended on people working together despite their differences.
The gathering brought together Benue indigenes living in Kaduna and other political stakeholders to discuss community concerns, political representation and relations with national leaders. Speakers also stressed the importance of political participation and collective engagement.
