Alebiosu’s Potential AFCON Call-Up Could See Blackburn Rovers Miss Key Defender

Ryan Alebiosu’s impressive start at Blackburn Rovers has sparked serious interest from the Nigerian national team, with reports indicating that the right-back could be called up for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The 23-year-old, who joined Rovers from Belgian side Kortrijk during the summer, has become one of manager Valérien Ismaël’s most consistent performers this season. His pace, defensive discipline, and attacking flair have made him a fan favourite at Ewood Park.

According to OwnGoalNigeria, Alebiosu has begun the process of obtaining a Nigerian passport to qualify for international selection. “He [Ryan] has applied for his Nigerian passport, and the earliest I think he can get it is December,” a source close to the player revealed. “So playing at the AFCON is the realistic target for now, even though the games in November are also possible.”

Rising Star in Blackburn’s Defence

Originally trained as a winger at Arsenal’s academy, Alebiosu has transitioned seamlessly into a full-back role, using his attacking instincts to contribute to both ends of the pitch. This season, he has already scored against Southampton and provided an assist for Andri Gudjohnsen in Rovers’ victory over Leicester City.

Statistics show his growing influence: an average of 0.99 successful dribbles, 2.81 tackles, and 1.16 accurate crosses per 90 minutes. Since Blackburn’s defeat to Birmingham City earlier in the campaign, Alebiosu has played every minute in all but one match.

AFCON Absence Could Hit Rovers Hard

If called up, Alebiosu could miss up to eight matches depending on how far Nigeria progress in the tournament. The Super Eagles are drawn in Group C alongside Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda, with their final group game set for December 30.

During this period, Blackburn could be without the defender for Championship fixtures against Millwall, Middlesbrough, Sheffield Wednesday, and Wrexham. Should Nigeria reach the later rounds, he might also miss games against Charlton, Ipswich, and possibly Swansea City, as well as the FA Cup third round on January 10.

Manager Valérien Ismaël may be forced to turn to Lewis Miller as temporary cover, though Miller has mostly featured at centre-back this season.

Nigeria’s Plans and AFCON Prospects

Nigeria’s head coach, Eric Chelle, is reportedly monitoring Alebiosu’s performances closely as he looks to strengthen his defensive options following injuries to Ola Aina and Felix Agu. The Super Eagles remain one of the favourites for the continental title, and a call-up would mark Alebiosu’s first international appearance.

For Alebiosu, the potential selection represents a major career milestone  but for Blackburn Rovers, it poses a challenge during a busy festive period when squad depth will be tested.
