In a bold move shaking up Nigeria’s political landscape, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has declared it will not be a launchpad for the presidential ambitions of heavyweights Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, as the opposition coalition gears up to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Speaking to journalists on Saturday, ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi dropped a bombshell: “The ADC is not a vehicle for anybody’s ambition. We are a party determined to chart a new course for Nigerian politics, free from the old guard’s grip.” Dismissing speculation about predetermined candidates, Abdullahi emphasized, “We have no favorites, no flagbearer discussions. Our focus is a transformative agenda, not individual egos.”

This statement comes just weeks after opposition leaders rallied behind the ADC as their unified platform to unseat Tinubu in the upcoming election. Both Abubakar, a former vice president, and Obi, ex-Anambra governor, have signaled their intent to join the coalition, intensifying the race. The duo, who placed second and third in the 2023 election won by Tinubu, according to Nigeria’s electoral commission, are no strangers to the presidential spotlight.

Abubakar’s political journey spans decades, with six unsuccessful presidential bids since 1993 under various parties, including the Social Democratic Party, Action Congress of Nigeria, and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). His latest defeat came in 2023 against Tinubu, after a dramatic return to the PDP in 2017. Obi, meanwhile, has emerged as a formidable force, galvanizing younger voters in his 2023 campaign.

Yet, the ADC’s rejection of personality-driven politics signals a seismic shift. Could this be the spark for a new political era in Nigeria, or will old ambitions derail the coalition’s unity? As 2027 looms, all eyes are on the ADC’s next move in this high-stakes battle for Nigeria’s future.
