Former Osun State governor, Rauf Aregbesola, has sharply criticised the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing it of relying on unending promises under its “Renewed Hope” agenda while failing to deliver meaningful change.

Speaking ahead of the 2027 general elections under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Aregbesola warned that Nigerians must remain vigilant against what he described as “political scammers” who thrive on empty rhetoric.

“The current government will continue to promise renewed hope till eternity,” Aregbesola said. “But as citizens, we have a duty to stop scammers and demand real governance that improves lives.”

His remarks come amid growing public frustration over economic hardship, rising inflation, and concerns about governance in Africa’s most populous nation.

Aregbesola, a former ally of Tinubu, framed his criticism as part of a broader call for political accountability, urging opposition groups and civil society to mobilise ahead of the next election cycle.

“We cannot allow slogans to replace substance,” he added. “Leadership must be measured by results, not by repeated promises.”

The Tinubu administration has consistently defended its policies, arguing that its reforms are necessary to stabilise the economy and set Nigeria on a path to long-term growth. Government officials maintain that the “Renewed Hope” agenda is already yielding results, particularly in fiscal restructuring and infrastructure development.

However, opposition voices like Aregbesola insist that the pace and impact of these reforms remain insufficient for millions of Nigerians facing daily economic challenges.

Political analysts say the statement signals a deepening divide within Nigeria’s political elite and could shape the dynamics of the 2027 elections, as parties reposition and alliances shift.

With campaigning still in its early stages, Aregbesola’s comments underscore what is likely to become a central theme of the race: whether Nigerians believe in the continuity of the current administration’s vision — or are ready to chart a different course.
