Tensions are mounting within Nigeria’s ruling party in Kano after a key political gathering exposed emerging cracks ahead of future elections.

Barau Jibrin, Deputy Senate President and a prominent figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC), was notably absent at an event where Abba Kabir Yusuf declared that no party member would be granted automatic tickets.

The governor’s remarks, delivered publicly, are widely seen as a signal of an open contest for party nominations, potentially setting the stage for intense internal competition.

In contrast, Abdullahi Gwarzo—a known political rival of Barau—was in attendance, a development that has intensified speculation over shifting alliances within the party.

Observers say Gwarzo’s presence, coupled with Barau’s absence, is fueling talk that he may be positioning himself to clinch the APC’s Kano North senatorial ticket, a seat currently held by Barau.

While neither camp has publicly addressed the speculation, the unfolding dynamics point to a possible intra-party struggle that could reshape the APC’s political landscape in Kano.
