The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed his commitment to the welfare of Nigerian Army personnel and their families, saying access to quality healthcare is vital to troop morale, operational readiness and the effectiveness of the Army.
Shaibu spoke on Thursday, 29 October 2026, at the unveiling of the newly constructed Headquarters of the Nigerian Army Medical Corps at Muhammadu Buhari Cantonment, Giri, Abuja. He urged the Corps to continue improving healthcare for officers, soldiers, their families and members of barracks communities.
He said investment in healthcare went beyond treating illness, adding that the physical wellbeing of personnel and their families was essential to maintaining a healthy, motivated and combat-ready force. Access to responsive, quality medical services, he said, would strengthen operational effectiveness and assure soldiers that their wellbeing and that of their loved ones remained a priority.
The COAS commended the Medical Corps for providing support during military operations, delivering routine healthcare and taking part in humanitarian interventions across the country. He said the new headquarters would strengthen administrative coordination, improve medical service delivery and provide a better working environment for the Corps.
Shaibu urged the Corps to use the facility to promote innovation, professionalism and responsive healthcare, in line with his command philosophy of sound administration and the Soldier First concept.
Earlier, the Corps Commander Medical, Brig.-Gen. Innocent Ewunchola, thanked the COAS for his leadership and investment in medical infrastructure. He said the Corps would continue to provide efficient, accessible and quality healthcare to eligible beneficiaries, and ensure the facility was properly maintained and used.
