Nigeria has strengthened its position as a major source of basketball talent, with a record number of players of African origin featuring on National Basketball Association (NBA) opening-night rosters for the 2026–27 season.
The development highlights the growing influence of Nigerian talent in the world’s most prestigious basketball league, with more than 25 players of Nigerian origin or descent represented across the NBA.
According to figures released by the NBA, more than 60 players born in Africa or with at least one African-born parent are on opening-night rosters for the new season — the highest number recorded.
Six players are listed as representing Nigeria: Ugonna Onyenso of the Detroit Pistons, Charles Bassey of the Golden State Warriors, Adem Bona of the Philadelphia 76ers, Precious Achiuwa of the Sacramento Kings, Josh Okogie of the Utah Jazz and Felix Okpara of the Washington Wizards.
The Nigerian contingent is part of a wider African presence that includes established NBA stars such as Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bam Adebayo, Joel Embiid and Pascal Siakam, who have family roots in Nigeria, Nigeria and Cameroon, Cameroon, and Cameroon respectively.
The NBA said its opening-night rosters feature 125 international players from 43 countries across six continents. France leads the international contingent with 17 players, followed by Canada with 16. Australia has nine, while Germany has seven. Nigeria and Serbia have six players each.
The figures underline the league’s continued international growth, with all 30 NBA teams featuring at least one international player.
For Nigeria, the growing representation reflects the country’s long-standing contribution to basketball, both through players born locally and those raised abroad with Nigerian heritage.
The development also offers fresh opportunities to strengthen basketball development in Nigeria, inspire young athletes and expand the country’s visibility on the global sporting stage.
The 2026–27 campaign is the NBA’s 81st season, with matches reaching fans in 214 countries and territories through broadcast partners and NBA League Pass.
