The Coalition of North-West State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Support Groups has endorsed the suspension of national chairman Ambassador Iliya Damagum and welcomed a Federal High Court ruling that halted the party’s planned national convention, saying both actions present an opportunity to restore internal democracy.

Addressing journalists in Kaduna, the coalition’s president general, Dr Haruna Muhammad Ismail Gumel, described the court judgment as confirmation that the PDP is in need of urgent reform. “The judgment of the Federal High Court has once again proved that all is not well with our party and that urgent action is needed to save it,” he said.

Gumel praised the National Working Committee’s decision to suspend Damagum and five other officials for what he described as “misconduct and dereliction of duty.” “We commend members of the NWC who took the bold decision to suspend the national chairman and five others who have failed to meet expectations,” he added.

The coalition also declared its support for the newly appointed acting national chairman, Mr Muhammad Abdulkadir, and urged him to steer the party towards “justice, fairness and reconciliation.” Gumel called on the acting leadership to constitute a reconciliation
