Nigeria’s electoral commission is expected to clarify the implications of a Supreme Court judgment on governorship, senatorial and state assembly candidates as it prepares to issue an official statement.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is expected to announce its position on Tuesday following a Supreme Court judgment affirming the constitutionality of Sections 77(5), 77(6) and 77(7) of the Electoral Act 2026.

The judgment also upheld INEC’s revised timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections, raising questions about the status of candidates seeking elective offices across the country.

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, is expected to meet with the commission’s top officials to deliberate on the ruling and determine its implications for the electoral process.

A statement on the outcome of the meeting is expected to be released to the public immediately afterwards.

The development comes days after INEC published the names of governorship and state House of Assembly candidates on Saturday to meet statutory obligations.

However, findings by Daily Trust indicate that the publication was carried out without reference to the Supreme Court judgment, leaving questions about how the ruling could affect the affected candidates.

The commission’s anticipated statement is expected to provide clarity on the matter, particularly for candidates whose eligibility or status may be affected by the interpretation and application of the provisions upheld by the court.

Until INEC makes its position public, the implications of the judgment for the affected candidates remain uncertain.
