Police in Nigeria’s northern Kano State have invited politician Aminu Abdullahi Warkal for questioning over the alleged display of a firearm during a political gathering.

The invitation followed the circulation of a video on social media which allegedly showed Mr Warkal openly displaying what appeared to be a pump-action rifle.

Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the command became aware of the video during a routine cyber patrol.

According to the police, the alleged display of the weapon could violate Nigeria’s Firearms Act and potentially cause fear, intimidate members of the public and threaten public peace.

Mr Warkal was invited to the Kano State Police Command headquarters in Bompai on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori.

Police said he was at the State Intelligence Department (SID), where investigations were under way.

The command said it would not tolerate lawlessness, thuggery or the display of weapons capable of threatening public safety, regardless of the status of those involved.

It also urged politicians, their supporters and other stakeholders to conduct their activities peacefully and comply with the Electoral Act, Firearms Act and other relevant laws.

The police have not said whether Mr Warkal has been charged with any offence. The investigation is continuing.
