A military aircraft carrying 32 people has crashed in Igbokoda, Ondo State, the Federal Government has confirmed.
The aircraft, with registration number NGR 931, reportedly disappeared from radar at about 09:13 local time on Monday while travelling from Benin towards Lagos.
Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, said air traffic controllers lost contact with the aircraft after repeated attempts to establish radio communication failed.
The wreckage was subsequently located near the Naval Base in Igbokoda, with search and rescue operations immediately launched.
According to preliminary information released by Mr Keyamo, the aircraft was carrying 25 passengers and seven crew members.
The minister said he had spoken with the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, and pledged the ministry’s full cooperation and assistance in the ongoing rescue operation.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain unclear, while authorities are yet to release details about casualties or possible survivors.
Mr Keyamo said further information would be made available as the search and rescue operation progresses.
The regulation and control of military aircraft fall outside the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development and the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).
