African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate Rotimi Amaechi has pledged to resign from office if Nigerians do not begin to see meaningful changes within one year of an ADC administration taking power.

Amaechi made the statement during an interview on AIT’s Democracy Today programme on Wednesday, as he outlined the priorities he said an ADC government would pursue if elected in the 2027 presidential election.

“If Nigeria does not begin to change one year after we have come to office, come to me, I will resign,” Amaechi said.

He stressed that he was not promising that every problem facing the country would be resolved within 12 months, but said Nigerians should at least be able to feel a noticeable improvement.

According to the former Rivers State governor and transport minister, security, education and the economy would be among the main areas requiring urgent attention under an ADC administration.

“You must deal with three things. You must deal with security, you must deal with education, you must deal with the economy before this country can progress,” he said.

Amaechi also said tackling corruption would be critical, arguing that public resources intended for development were being diverted into private hands.

He criticised the removal of the petrol subsidy by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, questioning whether Nigerians had seen sufficient benefits from the policy.

The ADC candidate further expressed concern about poverty and Nigeria’s reliance on imported finished goods, claiming that more than 46% of such goods were being imported.

“A Nigeria that imports over 46 per cent of finished goods, who are those importing? Nigeria is in trouble,” he said.

Amaechi also referred to reports of Nigerians booing President Tinubu during his journey from Lagos airport to his residence, saying an ADC government would seek to improve the conditions that he believes have contributed to public dissatisfaction.

“If we become president, nobody will do that. They will be clapping for us because we will change Nigeria,” he said.

Amaechi was selected by the ADC in June as the running mate to its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, for the 2027 election. (Channels TV)

His latest comments place a one-year performance benchmark on the proposed ADC administration, with Amaechi linking his continued stay in office to whether Nigerians begin to experience what he described as tangible change.
