The United States Secret Service has warned drone operators against flying unmanned aircraft over New York City during the United Nations General Assembly.
The agency said the city would operate under strict drone restrictions as world leaders and senior officials gather in New York for the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
“Leave the drone at home,” the Secret Service said, warning that New York City would be a “NO DRONE ZONE” during the event.
The restrictions are part of a wider security operation involving the Secret Service, New York Police Department, New York State Police and other federal agencies.
Authorities said the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had imposed temporary flight restrictions covering the UN area, with unauthorised drone flights prohibited.
Officials warned that anyone who violates the restrictions could face investigation, seizure of their drone or criminal charges.
New York authorities have deployed thousands of police officers and federal personnel as part of the security operation, with additional measures covering roads, waterways and the airspace around the United Nations headquarters.
The Secret Service is coordinating the overall security operation, while the NYPD and other agencies are providing support.
The operation comes as nearly 200 countries are expected to be represented during the high-level UN meetings, resulting in extensive motorcades, road closures and heightened security across Manhattan.
Authorities have also deployed counter-drone teams and authorised surveillance drones to monitor the restricted airspace.
Officials have urged members of the public to check current FAA flight restrictions before operating any unmanned aircraft in the New York area.
The restrictions are expected to remain in place during the UN General Assembly’s high-level week as authorities seek to maintain security around visiting heads of state and other senior dignitaries.
