Minister of Works, David Umahi, is expected to inspect the increasingly congested Benin–Asaba Road following growing concerns over worsening traffic gridlock and deteriorating movement along the major transport corridor.
The inspection is expected to focus on the condition of the road, the causes of the persistent congestion and measures required to ease the hardship faced by motorists and commuters.
The Benin–Asaba route is a major link between Edo and Delta states and serves as an important corridor for the movement of people and goods across southern Nigeria. However, increasing traffic congestion has led to longer journey times, with motorists frequently spending hours on sections of the road.
The situation has heightened calls for urgent government intervention, particularly as the route remains vital to commercial activities and regional connectivity.
Umahi’s planned inspection is expected to provide an opportunity for the Federal Government to assess the situation first-hand and determine immediate and longer-term measures to restore smoother traffic flow.
The minister has repeatedly stressed the government’s commitment to improving Nigeria’s road infrastructure and addressing bottlenecks affecting major highways.
Motorists and residents along the corridor will be watching closely for concrete measures following the inspection, amid mounting concerns that continued gridlock could further disrupt economic activity and worsen travel conditions.
