The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved infrastructure projects worth about N540 billion to upgrade the National Hospital in Abuja and transform it into a quaternary healthcare institution.
The approval was given at a meeting of the council, with the projects expected to strengthen the hospital’s capacity to provide highly specialised medical services and reduce the need for Nigerians to seek advanced treatment abroad.
Among the projects approved is the construction of a specialised cancer treatment centre, alongside other critical infrastructure aimed at modernising the hospital and expanding its range of medical services.
A quaternary healthcare institution represents the highest level of specialised medical care, providing advanced treatment for complex and rare medical conditions, as well as supporting cutting-edge research, experimental medicine and highly specialised procedures.
The planned upgrade is expected to improve access to advanced healthcare services for Nigerians, particularly patients requiring specialised cancer care and other complex medical interventions.
The Federal Government’s investment comes amid renewed efforts to strengthen the country’s healthcare infrastructure and improve the quality of specialised medical services available within Nigeria.
Further details on the scope and implementation timeline of the approved projects are expected to be released by the relevant authorities.
