Police in Ogun State have arrested two men suspected of belonging to a ‘one-chance’ robbery gang terrorising commuters in Abeokuta.
The suspects, identified as 29-year-old Bidemi Tijani and 42-year-old Olajide Rasaq, were apprehended on August 15 during an intelligence-driven operation by the Violent Crime Response Unit.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the suspects were intercepted after the police received information that members of the syndicate, posing as commercial taxi operators, were travelling towards Ita-Oshin in Abeokuta.
“Acting promptly on the tip-off, tactical operatives of the VCRU gave the fleeing robbers a hot chase towards Ita-Oshin, successfully intercepting the vehicle and apprehending the two suspects.
“Upon interrogation and putting down their statements under caution, both suspects confessed to being active members of the ‘One Chance’ robbery syndicate terrorizing commuters within the Abeokuta metropolis.
“Efforts are currently being intensified by operatives to track down and apprehend other fleeing members of the syndicate, establish the full extent of their activities, and recover necessary exhibits,” the statement read.
The Commissioner of Police in Ogun, CP Bode Ojajuni, praised the VCRU team for its swift intervention and professionalism.
Ojajuni assured residents that the command would continue its campaign against criminal elements, stressing that offenders would have no hiding place in the state.
He also advised residents and commuters to stay alert and promptly report suspicious activities to the police through Gateway Shield on 0800 000 9111, or the emergency lines 09164859299 and 09154293464.
