Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has promised to restore fuel subsidies if elected president of Nigeria.
Mr Sowore said his administration would reverse the current approach to fuel pricing, arguing that government intervention is necessary to ease the burden of rising living costs on Nigerians.
“I will bring back fuel subsidy,” Sowore said, outlining his position on how his administration would address the economic hardship facing citizens.
The AAC candidate has consistently criticised the removal of fuel subsidies, which was announced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu shortly after he assumed office in May 2023.
The subsidy removal led to a sharp increase in petrol prices and has been followed by wider concerns over inflation, transportation costs and the rising cost of basic commodities.
Sowore, who is seeking to contest the 2027 presidential election, has positioned himself as an alternative to the established political parties, promising what he describes as fundamental changes to Nigeria’s economic and political system.
His pledge to restore fuel subsidies is likely to feature prominently in his campaign, particularly as the cost of living remains a major concern for millions of Nigerians.
The government, however, has maintained that the removal of the subsidy was necessary to reduce the financial burden on the state and redirect public resources towards other areas of the economy.
With the 2027 election approaching, economic policies including fuel pricing, inflation, employment and the cost of living are expected to remain central issues in the presidential campaign.
