His death comes weeks after Lionel Messi helped Argentina through the 2026 World Cup, during which the footballer spoke emotionally about experiencing difficult personal circumstances away from the pitch.
Jorge played a major role in his son’s extraordinary football career. He served as Messi’s agent and business manager for many years, helping guide his professional affairs from the early stages of his career in Barcelona through his later moves to Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Miami.
The relationship between father and son was also central to Messi’s development as a footballer. Jorge supported the young Messi’s ambitions from his childhood in Rosario and accompanied him to Barcelona at the age of 13 for the trial that eventually paved the way for his historic career at the Catalan club.
