The Federal Government has announced plans to begin the local production of family planning commodities as part of efforts to improve access to reproductive health services and strengthen coordination across government.
The move was announced as the government inaugurated a committee tasked with advancing a coordinated, whole-of-government approach to family planning and harnessing Nigeria’s youthful population as a driver of sustainable national development.
Officials said producing family planning commodities locally would help strengthen the country’s health system, improve availability of essential supplies and reduce dependence on imported products.
The initiative is also expected to support Nigeria’s broader efforts to address the reproductive health needs of its rapidly growing population, particularly young people.
The government said the country’s large youthful population should be viewed not only as a demographic challenge but also as an opportunity to accelerate economic growth and development.
The newly inaugurated committee is expected to bring together relevant government institutions and stakeholders to develop strategies for improving family planning access, strengthening supply chains and promoting greater coordination among ministries and agencies.
The government said the initiative would form part of broader efforts to ensure that Nigerians, particularly women and young people, have access to quality and affordable family planning services.
It added that stronger investment in family planning could contribute to improved maternal and child health outcomes while supporting families to make informed decisions about the timing and spacing of pregnancies.
The Federal Government said it remained committed to creating an enabling environment for local manufacturing and ensuring that family planning remains an integral part of Nigeria’s national development agenda.
