Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has directed police officers across the country to adopt a shoot-at-sight response against individuals found carrying illegal firearms and posing an immediate threat to public safety.
The directive, announced amid growing concerns over violent crimes, banditry, kidnapping and armed attacks in several parts of the country, is aimed at strengthening the police response to armed criminality and restoring public confidence in national security.
According to the police leadership, the order specifically targets suspected criminals unlawfully bearing firearms who refuse lawful commands, resist arrest, or engage security operatives in violent confrontations. Officers have also been instructed to remain professional and ensure that the use of lethal force complies with existing laws and operational guidelines.
The Inspector-General stressed that the Nigeria Police Force would not tolerate the proliferation of illegal weapons or any act capable of threatening lives and property, warning that those found in unlawful possession of firearms would face the full weight of the law.
Security analysts say the directive reflects the authorities’ determination to curb rising insecurity, although they note that its implementation will likely attract scrutiny from human rights advocates, who have consistently called for strict adherence to rules governing the use of force by law enforcement agencies.
The police have urged members of the public to cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious persons and the illegal possession of firearms, while assuring citizens of their commitment to protecting lives and maintaining public order across the country.
