United States President Donald Trump has claimed that Washington was only “about four weeks” away from exhausting its strategic oil reserves, arguing that the looming energy shortfall played a decisive role in pushing his administration towards an agreement with Iran.
Speaking to reporters during the G7 summit in France, Trump described what he portrayed as a critical vulnerability facing the United States, saying dwindling reserves left the administration with little room to manoeuvre.
“We run out of reserves at about four weeks,” Trump said. “There are reserves all over the world, and we would really run out. There’ll be a time when you wouldn’t be able to get it.”
The president suggested the prospect of a severe supply disruption influenced Washington’s approach to negotiations with Tehran, although he did not provide further details to support the claim.
Trump’s remarks come amid continued debate over US energy security and the role of strategic petroleum reserves in responding to global market shocks and geopolitical tensions.
