The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly intercepted gold bars valued at approximately ₦4 billion at the Aminu Kano International Airport, with the shipment allegedly linked to former Zamfara State Governor, Senator Abdul’aziz Yari.
According to multiple reports, the gold consignment was allegedly being prepared for export to Saudi Arabia before it was intercepted by operatives of the anti-graft agency.
The EFCC is said to have launched an investigation into the ownership of the gold and the circumstances surrounding the attempted export. However, the commission has yet to issue an official statement confirming the seizure or providing details of the ongoing probe.
Senator Yari has also not publicly commented on the allegations. Reports indicate that requests seeking his response had not been answered as of the time of filing this report.
The development comes amid heightened scrutiny of Nigeria’s solid minerals sector and renewed efforts by authorities to clamp down on the illegal export of the country’s mineral resources.
