Nigeria’s Senate has passed a bill seeking to establish the National Agency for Malaria Elimination, a move lawmakers say could strengthen the country’s fight against one of its deadliest public health challenges.

The proposed legislation cleared its third reading on Wednesday after senators considered and adopted the report of the Senate Committee on Health (Secondary and Tertiary).

If signed into law, the agency will be tasked with coordinating and driving nationwide efforts aimed at eliminating malaria, a disease that continues to place a significant burden on Nigeria’s healthcare system.

The bill marks a major legislative step towards enhancing malaria control programmes and improving public health outcomes across the country.
