Yakubu Murtala Ajaka, a former governorship candidate in Kogi State, has officially withdrawn from the Kogi East Senatorial race. In a surprising strategic shift ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary, Ajaka declared his full support for the incumbent, Senator Jibrin Isah Echocho.
In a statement released Wednesday, Ajaka noted that his withdrawal followed “extensive consultations” with key stakeholders. He emphasized that the move is rooted in the collective interest of the Kogi East district rather than personal ambition.
While acknowledging past disagreements with Echocho’s leadership style, Ajaka described the incumbent as the “better alternative” for the region. He cited Echocho’s legislative experience, ranking status, and national influence as critical factors in attracting development to the constituency.
“This decision is aimed at fostering unity within our district and strengthening the support base for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid,” Ajaka stated.
Ajaka concluded by calling on his supporters, youth groups, and party members to rally behind Echocho to ensure “peace, unity, and continued progress.” He further urged the APC national leadership to monitor Kogi’s political landscape to ensure long-term party stability.
