Nigeria’s federal government has reaffirmed its commitment to the construction of the 1,028-kilometre Lagos–Abidjan corridor, a flagship regional highway project aimed at boosting trade and connectivity across West Africa.

Speaking in Abuja on Thursday, Minister of Works David Umahi said the government remains fully aligned with efforts to deliver the ambitious project, despite raising concerns over aspects of the current design proposed by Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Umahi made the remarks during a high-level meeting with delegations from ECOWAS and the African Development Bank in the Nigerian capital.

The Lagos–Abidjan highway, estimated at over 1,000km, is expected to link major economic hubs across several West African countries, easing the movement of goods and people while strengthening regional integration.

While reiterating Nigeria’s support for the project, the minister expressed reservations about elements of the design framework, signalling the need for further technical review and alignment among stakeholders.

Officials say discussions are ongoing as regional partners work to finalise plans for the multi-billion-dollar infrastructure project, widely seen as a cornerstone for economic growth within the ECOWAS bloc.
