Nigeria’s President has issued a direct charge to political allies preparing the ground for the 2027 general elections, urging them to take the message of his administration’s reforms beyond elite circles and into communities across the country.

Addressing a gathering of supporters branded as “Renewed Hope Ambassadors” in Abuja, Tinubu called on campaigners to engage Nigerians at the grassroots level, framing the next electoral cycle as a referendum on his government’s economic and institutional reforms.

The president said those canvassing on his behalf must “tell the story clearly and truthfully”, highlighting efforts aimed at stabilising the economy, restructuring public finances and expanding social investment programmes. He stressed that public understanding of policy decisions — including difficult economic adjustments — would be central to shaping voter confidence ahead of 2027.

“We must connect directly with the people,” he told attendees, according to a statement released after the meeting. “Our reforms are designed to secure the future of this country, and Nigerians deserve to hear that message face to face.”

Since assuming office, Tinubu has embarked on sweeping reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of foreign exchange windows — measures his administration argues are necessary to rebuild fiscal sustainability and attract investment. However, the policies have also fuelled inflationary pressures and triggered public debate over the pace and social cost of change.

Political analysts say the president’s directive signals an early mobilisation strategy, with the ruling party seeking to consolidate its base while countering criticism from opposition figures who blame the reforms for rising living costs.

By tasking loyalists with taking the message directly to local communities, the presidency appears keen to shift the narrative from macroeconomic indicators to everyday impact, emphasising infrastructure projects, targeted welfare schemes and long-term economic restructuring.

With nearly a year before formal campaign activities are expected to intensify, the call to action suggests that groundwork for 2027 is already under way, as Nigeria’s political landscape begins to tilt towards the next electoral contest.
