The Kano State Government has launched the distribution of 99 truckloads of rice, containing 54,600 bags of 50kg each, to residents across the state as part of its annual Ramadan welfare program.
Governor Abba Yusuf officially flagged off the exercise on Tuesday at Maganda Road, Kano, stating that the initiative is aimed at providing critical relief to the less privileged and mitigating the economic challenges faced by citizens during the holy month.
In a statement released by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, it was confirmed that the food items would be distributed across all 44 local government areas of the state, with specific allocations also set aside for selected groups and individuals.
Speaking at the launch, Governor Yusuf described the distribution as a hallmark of his administration’s commitment to the welfare of the people during the fasting period. He detailed the logistics of the program, noting that 44 of the trucks have been designated for direct allocation to the 44 LGAs. The remaining consignments will be specifically channeled to the most vulnerable groups throughout the state.
To guarantee transparency and accountability, the Governor announced the formation of oversight committees at both the state and local government levels. The state-level committee is chaired by the Secretary to the State Government, while the Ministry of Agriculture will serve as the coordinating body for the exercise.
Governor Yusuf also used the opportunity to call on the Federal Government, corporate bodies, and public-spirited individuals to complement the state’s efforts by providing additional support to ease the burden on citizens during Ramadan.
In his remarks, the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, who accompanied the Governor, commended the administration for prioritizing the people’s welfare. He noted that such initiatives would significantly reduce anxiety and hardship among residents during the fasting period.
Also speaking, the Chairperson of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano State, Hajiya Sa’adatu Soja, praised the government’s inclusive distribution strategy. She assured that local councils are committed to ensuring the items reach the intended beneficiaries without bias or diversion.
