An Arik Air Boeing 737-700 aircraft operating flight W3 740 from Lagos to Port Harcourt was forced to divert to Benin Airport this morning after the crew heard a loud bang from the left engine during descent.

The incident occurred as the plane, registration 5N-MJF, approached Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, on Wednesday, 11 February 2026. Acting in accordance with standard aviation safety protocols, the pilots made a precautionary diversion to the nearest suitable airport.

Arik Air confirmed that the aircraft landed safely in Benin, with all passengers—reportedly around 80—and crew disembarking without injury or further complications.

The airline emphasised that the diversion was carried out purely as a safety measure following the unusual engine noise. Investigations into the cause are now under way. Passengers were unharmed, and no injuries were reported.
