Dumebi Kachikwu, presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the 2023 elections, has cautioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu against introducing additional taxes in 2026, warning that such measures could sharply worsen the economic strain already faced by millions of Nigerians.
Kachikwu issued the warning in a statement on Tuesday, arguing that households and businesses are still struggling with the impact of inflation, rising living costs and what he described as “policy pressures” introduced since the beginning of the administration’s reforms.
He said the government must prioritise stabilising the economy rather than imposing new fiscal burdens.
“Any further tax increments at this time will intensify the suffering of ordinary Nigerians and cripple small businesses already on the brink,” Kachikwu said. “The government should focus on stimulating production, cutting waste and improving revenue collection efficiency, rather than taxing people into deeper poverty.”
The ADC chieftain stressed that a more inclusive approach to economic policy was needed, adding that Nigerians deserved “breathing space” after months of austerity and price shocks.
He urged the Presidency to consult widely with economic experts, labour unions and the private sector before taking decisions that could have far-reaching consequences.
The government has not yet responded to Kachikwu’s comments.
