Nigeria’s Minister of Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, personally delivered a message of solidarity and fraternity from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to Captain Ibrahim Traoré, President of Burkina Faso, during a high-level meeting in Ouagadougou on Wednesday.
The closed-door discussion, which EXCLUSIVELY obtained details from diplomatic sources, centered on enhancing bilateral and regional cooperation—with a particular focus on joint security operations and counter-terrorism strategies amid escalating instability in the Sahel.
Tuggar, during the audience with President Traoré, addressed recent tensions, including the controversial emergency landing of a Nigerian aircraft in Burkina Faso. In a notable moment, the minister formally expressed Nigeria’s regret over “procedural irregularities” in the authorization of the flight, reaffirming Nigeria’s “deep respect for Burkina Faso’s sovereignty and strict adherence to international aviation protocols.”
Crucially, Tuggar also distanced the Federal Government from recent inflammatory remarks made by a Nigerian political party official, who alleged maltreatment of Nigerian military personnel in Burkina Faso.
“We clearly dissociate ourselves from those comments and express our sincere regrets to the government and people of Burkina Faso,” Tuggar stated.
The minister praised Captain Traoré’s government for their “spirit of fraternity” and the dignified treatment extended to the Nigerian aircraft’s occupants during their unexpected stay.
Both parties agreed to intensify collaboration in the fight against terrorism, with Tuggar acknowledging Burkina Faso’s “notable successes in recent counter-terrorism operations.” He reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to sustained dialogue and regional solidarity, emphasizing the need for “enhanced cooperation to tackle shared security challenges.”
This exclusive meeting signals a strategic effort to mend and strengthen ties between the two nations, as security remains a critical priority for Tinubu’s administration in the West African sub-region.
