The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State has said the ongoing political mobilisation led by the Minister of State for Defence, Dr Bello Matawalle, and former Governor Abdulaziz Yari is steadily weakening the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

In a statement released on Tuesday in Gusau by the APC Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Yusuf Idris, the party noted that the combined efforts of the two leaders have continued to motivate and strengthen APC loyalists across the state.

According to Idris, the growing support from Matawalle and Yari has inspired a wave of defections from the PDP, with many politicians choosing to join the APC in what he described as “a renewed movement for political realignment and progress.”

He said, “Today, we happily and officially received Honourable Maharazu Faru of the PDP, representing Maradun II Constituency in the State House of Assembly, who defected to the APC. The ceremony, which took place amidst a large crowd at the APC Secretariat in Gusau, was chaired by the State Chairman, Honourable Tukur Danfulani.”

The party spokesman also disclosed that the lawmaker was not alone in his defection, as several PDP ward executives and members from his constituency joined him.

“Also joining were all the five ward chairmen of Faru/Magami Ward, Honourable Ahmad Lawal (Sarkin Samari) of Gidan Goga Ward, Honourable Sanusi Ahmad Liman of Tsibiri Ward, and Honourable Lawal Mohammed of Kaya Ward. Others include Shingi Dan-Abu of Janbako and the ex-officio, Alhaji Salisu Dodo Faru, along with hundreds of their supporters,” Idris said.

Speaking after his defection, Hon. Maharazu Faru said his decision was influenced by what he described as the PDP government’s failure to fulfil its campaign promises.

He stated, “Governor Dauda Lawal has failed to address the issues he campaigned on, especially insecurity, which was the major concern of our people. My constituency has been neglected and not recognised, and members of the PDP from my area have not been treated with fairness and justice.”

The lawmaker also lamented the internal crisis within the PDP, which he claimed had weakened the party’s structure.

According to him, “The PDP is now characterised by crises at all levels, and this is why many governors and supporters have been leaving the party to join the APC.”
