The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, says he will meet with the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, following the demolition of police-owned duplexes built illegally beneath high-tension power lines in Abuja.
During a site visit to the demolished structures in the Apo Dutse District on Friday, Wike said the buildings were erected despite repeated warnings and a clear denial of development approval by the FCT Department of Development Control.
His media aide, Lere Olayinka, stated that the Minister was briefed after officials from the Department demolished at least eleven housing units—comprising three- and four-bedroom flats—on Thursday.
The demolition reportedly led to the arrest of some Department staff by police officers.
“Well, it’s unfortunate,” Wike said during his visit. “Development Control informed me yesterday that they had to step in to halt the illegal construction. The land was allocated to the Nigeria Police, but their request for building approval was rejected due to the dangers of the high-tension line.”
Wike condemned the disregard for safety and planning regulations.
“They went ahead regardless, and Development Control had no choice but to act. Sadly, our officers were arrested, and that’s why I must take this up with the IGP. I’m sure he may not be aware—but we cannot allow impunity. Rules must be followed,” he said.
