The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned it will go ahead with its planned two-week nationwide warning strike if the Federal Government fails to meet its demands by 13 October.
ASUU President, Chris Piwuna, issued the ultimatum during an orientation and leadership training themed “Understanding the Principles of the Union” at the Niger Delta University branch in Amassoma, Bayelsa State.
Piwuna said the decision to strike had been finalised, stressing that the union would begin the warning strike at midnight on Monday and later decide on an indefinite action if the issues remain unresolved.
He criticised the government for delaying the renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU agreement, adding that the union had exercised patience for years without meaningful progress.
Piwuna also condemned the Federal Government’s student loan scheme, arguing that it was unrealistic in a struggling economy with high unemployment and widespread poverty.
He further cited reports from NELFUND, alleging that the new agency had spent ₦14 billion on personnel despite having fewer than 100 staff members, describing it as proof of misplaced priorities.
