President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed his profound condolences following the devastating fire that broke out at the Afriland Tower in Lagos on Tuesday, September 16, 2025. T
he tragedy has left seven victims dead, while several others have sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment in various hospitals across the state.
The inferno, which ravaged the high-rise building on Broad Street, Lagos Island, has left many in shock, particularly within the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and United Bank for Africa (UBA), both of which have offices within the affected tower. Four staff members from FIRS are among those confirmed dead.
In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, President Tinubu extended his deepest sympathies to the families of the deceased, as well as the management and staff of Afriland Properties Limited, FIRS, and UBA.

“The President expresses his heartfelt condolences to the management and staff of Afriland Properties Limited, the FIRS, UBA, and especially to the families who lost loved ones in the devastating fire. He also sends his wishes for a swift recovery to the injured, who are receiving medical attention,” the statement read.
The fire incident has sparked widespread concern, as it was one of two separate fires that occurred in the Lagos Island Business District that day, causing substantial damage and destruction to property. Authorities and emergency responders, including the Federal Fire Service, medical teams, and other first responders, have been commended for their quick and efficient actions in evacuating individuals from the building and preventing further casualties.
In his message, President Tinubu also urged greater caution, emphasizing the need for more extensive safety training and preparedness in public and private buildings to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
As the medical teams continue to fight to save the lives of the remaining victims, the incident serves as a somber reminder of the importance of fire safety and the critical role of swift emergency responses.
In closing, President Tinubu prayed for the repose of the souls of the departed and wished a speedy recovery to those still receiving care. He also expressed gratitude to the courageous responders who helped mitigate the effects of the fire.
