The Anambra North Labour Party Caucus in the National Assembly has strongly criticised the recent suspension of Hon Bernard Abuchi Udemezue by the Anambra State House of Assembly. The caucus described the decision as “hasty and high-handed,” asserting that it undermines democratic values and stifles dissenting voices.

Hon Udemezue’s suspension followed his public disclosure on social media of the lawmakers’ emoluments, including a ₦10 million quarterly constituency allowance—an expose that reportedly unsettled his colleagues. Four notable Labour Party members, Senator Tony Nwoye, Hon Afam Ogene, Hon Idu Emeka, and Hon Peter Aniekwe, believe the measure may have been influenced by Governor Prof Chukwuma Soludo, whom Udemezue had challenged over the perceived neglect of his constituency.

“Our democracy thrives on robust debate, constructive criticism, and diversity of opinions. Silencing opposition voices through hasty suspension sets a dangerous precedent that should concern every Nigerian,” the caucus stated. While acknowledging that some of Udemezue’s language was unparliamentary, the group condemned the State Government’s role in convening the Assembly during its break to swiftly enact the suspension without due process.

They further emphasised, “The suspension was carried out without adequate notice, disregarding the fundamental principle of natural justice—‘audi alteram partem’—hear the other side.” The caucus also underlined Udemezue’s efforts in calling for the enforcement of the Supreme Court ruling on local government financial autonomy, which requires State Governments to allow local councils control over their federally allocated funds.

Highlighting the plight of Ayamelum Local Government Area, Udemezue’s constituency, the caucus reiterated his demand for improved infrastructure and tangible benefits from the region’s natural resource wealth. They warned that silencing his representation amounted to denying his constituents’ voice in government.

The Labour Party urges the Anambra State House of Assembly to reconsider the suspension, ensure a transparent hearing for Hon Udemezue, and address the pressing issues he raised.

“If found guilty, any disciplinary measures should be carried out openly and lawfully. Protecting our democratic institutions’ integrity is paramount,” they concluded.
