Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has declared that the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, was the rightful winner of the election that brought President Bola Tinubu to power.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Tonight on Monday, Lawal stated, “Based on the facts available to me, Peter Obi won the election. We monitored the process, collected data, and tracked results from the field. Some of these results were later altered.”
He maintained that the figures he had at the time did not support Tinubu’s victory, adding that the president’s conduct has made reconciliation impossible. “He is arrogant. The guy has an arrogance that belies definitions. The problem with Bola Tinubu is that he thinks I’m the one that offended him. I didn’t offend him — he offended me. He is full of himself, and I believe he didn’t win the election,” Lawal said.
Lawal, a former ally of the president, has been a vocal critic since before the 2023 polls, and his latest remarks are likely to rekindle debates over the credibility of the election and the Independent National Electoral Commission’s handling of results.
