The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has issued a stern warning to Nigerians travelling to the United States, urging them to stick strictly to the purpose of their visas or face consequences including deportation and travel bans.
This follows concerns from the US government about rising cases of Nigerians misusing their visas, especially by overstaying or engaging in activities outside their approved status.
Speaking in Abuja, the NIS spokesperson, Akinsola Akinlabi, said:
“All visa holders are advised to strictly adhere to the purpose stated in their visa applications. Any breach of immigration or other laws can lead to visa revocation or deportation.”
He explained that US immigration officials carry out continuous security screenings even after entry. According to him, Nigerians who overstay or flout visa terms risk severe penalties, including permanent ineligibility for future US travel.
Akinlabi also urged Nigerian students in American universities to maintain full-time enrolment, warning that unauthorised withdrawal from studies could result in visa cancellation.
“Students must remain in active academic programmes. Dropping out or repeated absenteeism without valid reasons could lead to losing your visa,” he said.
He further disclosed that US consular officers may reject tourist visa applications if they suspect applicants plan to give birth in the US to secure citizenship for their children.
“The NIS will continue to work closely with the US Mission in Nigeria to prevent any inclusion of Nigeria in expanded visa restrictions,” Akinlabi added.
He called on all Nigerian citizens planning to travel to the US to take the advisory seriously, saying that irresponsible behaviour could undermine the chances of genuine applicants.
“Respecting visa rules protects the credibility of all Nigerians abroad. We urge everyone to conduct themselves properly,” he said.
