Abubakar Malami, Nigeria’s immediate past Attorney General and Minister of Justice, has defended the anti-corruption legacy of the former administration, asserting that corruption did not thrive during President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure.
Speaking on Arise News on Tuesday night, Malami firmly stated, “During the period of President Muhammadu Buhari, corruption was not thriving at all.”
He highlighted significant achievements, including “convictions in thousands” for high-profile corruption cases. The former AGF also claimed that over $2 billion in plundered funds were recovered under Buhari’s watch.
Malami further emphasized the structural reforms implemented by the Buhari government to combat financial leakages, citing the Treasury Single Account (TSA) and the Bank Verification Number (BVN). “He brought about the Single Treasury Account, which created a governance-wide visibility associated with funding the finances of the government,” Malami explained.
Internationally, Malami noted that Buhari’s administration received commendations for its anti-corruption efforts. He mentioned accolades from the African Union, which named Buhari the continent’s anti-corruption champion, and recognition from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
