As the 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival gathers momentum in Ogun State, the anticipation in the host city of Abeokuta is palpable. No fewer than 23 states have already arrived ahead of the official opening of the biennial competition, scheduled for Sunday, 19 May.
From refurbished venues to coordinated logistics and high-spirited cultural rehearsals, Ogun State is positioning itself to host what stakeholders have described as the “best festival in Nigeria’s sporting history.”
The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, expressed his optimism in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday, noting that the state’s preparations were reflective of a serious commitment to excellence.
“Twenty-three states are already in the camp; their feeding and welfare are top-notch and seamless,” he told NAN. “I just spoke with leaders of four states who are already praising the state. Globally, if you have an event of this nature, the first thing is accommodation and feeding.”
Observers Times gathered that finishing touches were still being applied at the MKO Abiola International Stadium in Kuto, Abeokuta, where the festival’s opening ceremony will be held. Cultural troupes were seen perfecting their performances under the evening sun, while final installations were ongoing across the sporting venues.
Hopes High as Stakeholders Eye Record-Breaking Edition
The Games, popularly dubbed the “Gateway Games 2024,” follow the last edition hosted by Delta State. However, many believe the Ogun edition may surpass previous records not just in attendance, but also in athlete discovery, sports diplomacy, and infrastructure legacy.
Abeokuta-based sports journalist, Mr Abiodun Alabi, told NAN, “The event will throw more talents that will go on to represent Nigeria at national and international events. It will also create expected economic opportunities for the people of the state.”
Alabi added that the extensive upgrades to the MKO Abiola Stadium had created “a facility worthy of hosting major international events,” while also confirming that at least three more sports tournaments have been scheduled to follow the festival a ripple effect of Ogun’s hosting gains.

Sports enthusiast, Mr Micheal Adesanya, echoed similar sentiments.
“This is not just a festival,” he said. “It’s a tool for national unity. We must ensure that the right talents are discovered, and not let politics undermine the essence of the Games.”
Ogun Cricket Teams Quietly Confident Amid Glitz of the Festival
While the buzz around the larger multi-sport festival dominates headlines, Ogun State’s cricket contingent is quietly preparing for what insiders say could be a breakthrough campaign. Under the radar but fiercely determined, the state’s cricket teams both male and female have undergone one of the most structured preparations ever seen in the sport at the state level.
In an exclusive media briefing on Saturday, 17 May, Chairman of the Ogun State Cricket Association, Mr Oludare Kuforiji (FCA), shared detailed insights into the level of preparedness of the state’s representatives.
“Ogun State Cricket teams have been in a close camp for a month with strong support and complement from the Cricket Association,” Kuforiji said. “They were moved to the government-arranged venue in Ikenne late evening yesterday to join the rest of the state contingent as the festival kicks off properly next week.”
Observers gathered that the teams underwent multi-stage camping exercises, allowing for intensive technical, physical, and psychological grooming.
To ensure seamless play during the Games, three specialised cricket pitches were developed a rare feat in Nigerian sports festival planning.
“These match pitches are not just for convenience,” Kuforiji explained. “Cricket will be hosting three different events ODI, T-20, and 6-aside and with both male and female teams competing, there are six gold medals up for grabs. We are giving ourselves the best shot at sweeping them.”
Kuforiji gave glowing commendations to the Ogun State Government for its consistent backing of cricket development. He further acknowledged the Nigeria Cricket Federation and its President, Mr Uyi Akpata, as well as other Federation officials and local stakeholders who had sustained the momentum of the sport.
A standout contributor to the cricket preparation was FSK Nigeria Limited, a corporate sponsor whose financial input proved decisive.
“They contributed tens of millions of naira to our preparations,” Kuforiji revealed. “That support covered our extended camping, equipment upgrades, and facility enhancements.”
Countdown to First Ball
Cricket matches at the festival are scheduled to begin on Tuesday, 20 May, and will run until 29 May. All matches will be held at the Cricket Pavilion within the MKO Abiola Sports Complex, which has been specially adapted for the Games.
With six gold medals on the line and fierce competitors expected from at least ten other states, Ogun’s silent warriors are not taking any chances.
