Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress have promised that more governors would defect to the party to deepen subnational government in the States.
The chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma, stated this while briefing journalists on the outcome of an emergency meeting of the APC leaders with defectors from Delta State held in Abuja on Saturday night.
According to Uzodinma, the gale of defections is a testimony that the APC government in Nigeria, led by Bola Tinubu, is being admired by many people.
“We have to meet to be able to manage this very huge success, to ensure that using the mechanism, the internal mechanism of our great party, that we will receive our new members, our new leaders.
“We will then come together as a family to grow the party and support the government in Delta for the benefit of our people and members of our great party.
“So, I think we are happy with the development and a big testimony to the fact that the APC government in Nigeria is being admired by many, if not all and sundry,” the Imo State Governor added.
Although Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State was absent, the meeting was attended by the Governors Bassey Otu (Cross River), Monday Okpebholo (Edo), Usman Ododo (Kogi) and Abiodun Oyebanji (Ekiti) States and their national chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje.
Uzodinma, who said the tide of defection is moving and will not end, also spoke on how to integrate old and new members of the APC in Delta State.
Uzodimma said: “You can see the tide is moving and people are joining, and there will be no end to it. You must have heard that our party in Delta is growing from strength to strength.
“The high point of the state of the party is that Delta is now almost a one-party state.
The recent wave of defections from the PDP to the APC has stirred debates among observers, politicians, and Nigerians alike.
With Okowa, a ranking member of the PDP who was the party’s vice presidential candidate in the 2023 election, joining APC, analysts argue that the most recent defections are a big blow to the main opposition party’s move to retake power in 2027.
But some PDP chieftains, including Bode George, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, and ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, are unmoved by the development.
